When considering daylighting materials, remember to consider a number of factors, including initial cost, life expectancy of the system, and thermal performance. With a wide range of options, Major can find a daylighting systems that's right for your needs and budget.
Ingraham High SchoolIngraham High School in Seattle, Washington was recently given an overhaul that included a dozen new classrooms and an open, tiered space for the school’s technical programs. An open courtyard space was created to help tie together the multiple floor levels and provide an area for both socializing and casual learning activities. To help bring light to the area, translucent panel skylights were utilized, allowing for controlled natural light to fill the space without the distracting glare or uncomfortable hot-spots that could occur with clear glazing materials. Beyond the light control capabilities of translucent panel systems, they’re also a good choice for renovation projects because of their light weight, requiring significantly less structural support than a comparable glass skylight system.
The Ingraham School Project, designed by Integrus Architecture, is clearly a beautiful design - but it's an award-winning one as well, including the 2013 AIA/CAE Educational Facility Design Award, the 2012 AIA Washington Civic Design Awards – Citation Award, and the 2012 IIDA - INawards / Design IN Public - Winner in Class.

The Department of Veteran's Affairs medical campus in Vancouver, Washington recently added a 20,000 square foot Outpatient Specialty Clinic, and the design blends practicality with comfort. While traditional glass windows allow for views to the exterior, a translucent skylight adds soft, diffuse light to the interior space.
Congratulations to PKA Architects, Kevcon Inc. and the Department of Government Affairs for the Outpatient Specialty Clinic's recent award for the Best Public Building Under $10M Award from the Associated General Contractors' 2012 Build Washington Awards for Construction Excellence.

Major Industries has taken translucent daylighting to a new level of thermal performance with the introduction of its new Clima-Tite™ daylighting system.
Officially unveiled at the 2010 Greenbuild Convention and Expo in Chicago, and recently released, Clima-Tite™ features the same built-in water management as our standard Guardian 275® translucent panel daylighting systems, but replaces the aluminum structure with pultruded fiberglass. This allows for improved u-factors and improved Condensation Resistance Factor (CRF) numbers versus aluminum-based systems.
Clima-Tite™ systems also offer a unique snap-to-lock installation feature that saves labor costs and eliminates the need for unsightly visible fasteners and provides a simple, clean and uncluttered appearance. Clima-Tite™ features Major’s Ultimate Serie™ FRP face sheet technology for unbeatable weathering performance and unmatched warranties, plus superior color retention, an erosion veil for extreme environments, and industry-long warranties.

In order to receive Florida approval (which encompasses most Florida counties), Major’s Guardian 275® translucent skylights had to withstand a variety of missile impact, water and air infiltration and pressure load tests. Guardian 275® translucent skylights, with their unique sandwich panel design and use of high-performance materials, offer strong protection against hurricane-force winds and flying debris – without sacrificing the numerous health and environmental benefits that daylighting provides.

There are times when a standard skylight fits the bill - and other times when you need a daylighting system that does more than let in light. Check out just a few unique translucent daylighting applications:
* RETROFIT READY - Add a unique look without a unique price tag with Guardian 275® Translucent Adapter Panels that offer seamless integration between 2.75" Guardian 275® translucent panels and conventional 1" framing systems.
* BLAST PROTECTION - Guardian 275® panels, after going though the most punishing blast tests in the translucent daylighting industry, meet or exceed Department of Defense (Level "C" Loading) and General Services Administration (Condition "1", Hazard Level "None") performance requirements. If your next project needs to meet anti-terrorism standards, but you're concerned about including daylighting in the design plan, visit our Blast Protection page - you'll find high-speed video of the actual testing.
* REMOVABLE SYSTEMS - Guardian 275® skylights can be configured with lifting hooks for easy access to machinery or medical equipment. Our curtainwall systems can also be easily disassembled for access to necessary equipment.
* COLORFUL OPTIONS - Besides a wide range of custom finish options, Major also offers Spectra-Grid™ colored insulation options for a unique stained-glass look, as well as a wide range of sheet color options - from Aqua to Desert Rose - that ensure a unique and eye-catching look.
When you're in need of a system that becomes and integral part of the building, Major Industries can work with you to create a system that's right for your next project.
