Guardian 275® Receives 2014 Florida Building Code Approval

Major Industries’ Guardian 275® translucent panel skylights and wall systems were recently proven to be in compliance with the Florida Building Commission’s 2014 Florida Building Code (up to Wind Zone 3 / Level D). Guardian 275® hurricane protection systems are engineered to provide a high level of protection while still offering the same high-quality, diffuse, glare-free light found in Major’s translucent panel systems.

In order to receive Florida Approval (which encompasses most Florida counties), Major’s Guardian 275® translucent systems had to withstand a variety of missile impact, water and air infiltration and pressure load tests. Guardian 275®, with its unique sandwich panel design and use of high-performance materials, offers strong protection against hurricane-force winds and flying debris – without sacrificing the numerous health and environmental benefits that daylighting provides. Project Spotlight: Maximizing Light

Creating an office environment that's welcoming and bright can be a challenge, but by incorporating Guardian 275® translucent panels with a Verti-Lite™ grid pattern (vertical grid only), the two-story, 48,000 square foot office of San Luis Obispo based Rosetta makes the most of available natural light.

Designed by Garcia Architecture + Design and built by J.W. Design & Construction in conjunction with NKT Commercial LLC, this LEED® certified space features the implementation of numerous high performance building materials including translucent panels and energy-efficient lighting - which the designers project will use 17% less energy than a standard building.

Major's Verti-Lite™ grid pattern is an eye-catching option for our Guardian 275® system, with clean lines that blend well with modern design elements and allow for a channel glass look without the high cost. Contact us today to find out more, or visit us online for additional information.

A positive look at sustainability vs. cost...

When considering daylighting materials, remember to consider a number of factors, including initial cost, life expectancy of the system, and thermal performance. With a wide range of options, Major can find a daylighting systems that's right for your needs and budget.

Project Spotlight:

Ingraham High School

Ingraham High School in Seattle, Washington was recently given an overhaul that included a dozen new classrooms and an open, tiered space for the school’s technical programs. An open courtyard space was created to help tie together the multiple floor levels and provide an area for both socializing and casual learning activities. To help bring light to the area, translucent panel skylights were utilized, allowing for controlled natural light to fill the space without the distracting glare or uncomfortable hot-spots that could occur with clear glazing materials. Beyond the light control capabilities of translucent panel systems, they’re also a good choice for renovation projects because of their light weight, requiring significantly less structural support than a comparable glass skylight system.

The Ingraham School Project, designed by Integrus Architecture, is clearly a beautiful design - but it's an award-winning one as well, including the 2013 AIA/CAE Educational Facility Design Award, the 2012 AIA Washington Civic Design Awards – Citation Award, and the 2012 IIDA - INawards / Design IN Public - Winner in Class.

New Outpatient Clinic Utilizes Translucent Skylight

The Department of Veteran's Affairs medical campus in Vancouver, Washington recently added a 20,000 square foot Outpatient Specialty Clinic, and the design blends practicality with comfort. While traditional glass windows allow for views to the exterior, a translucent skylight adds soft, diffuse light to the interior space.

Congratulations to PKA Architects, Kevcon Inc. and the Department of Government Affairs for the Outpatient Specialty Clinic's recent award for the Best Public Building Under $10M Award from the Associated General Contractors' 2012 Build Washington Awards for Construction Excellence.
